Nightcall Intro Arpeggio
The rolling, slightly detuned saw pluck that cycles a minor broken chord from the intro of Nightcall through the whole track: one note at a time, dark and filtered, with a soft delay halo.
- Class: mono — one note at a time

Identity
What it is. The first musical element of Nightcall: after the payphone sound effects, a muted synth figure rolls through a minor broken chord and then keeps turning under the verses and choruses. It sits in the middle register, behind the voice and above the bass, and supplies the track's motion while the harmony changes slowly.
Recalled traits (from the recording, not transcribed): even, machine-steady notes; a soft pluck rather than a hard stab; slightly detuned saw-family tone; darker and rounder than a typical bright synthwave arp; notes ring a little into each other; a gentle delay and chorus halo. The track is recalled at roughly 91 BPM in a minor key (A minor is recalled, unverified).
Inferred (labelled): the exact note rate, waveform mix, filter and envelope values in The Sound. Class: mono, because the figure sounds one note at a time.

The Sound
Reconstruction. Recalled items describe what is heard; inferred items are this pack's patch guesses.
- Oscillators - recalled: saw-family, slightly detuned. Inferred: two sawtooths at 8' detuned about 6-10 cents; no sub-oscillator.
- Filter - recalled: dark, rounded pluck. Inferred: 24 dB low-pass, cutoff about 1-1.5 kHz at rest, resonance 15-20 %, keyboard tracking about 50 %, filter-envelope amount +35-45 %.
- Filter envelope - inferred: attack 0 ms, decay 250-350 ms, sustain 15-25 %, release 250 ms.
- Amplifier envelope - recalled: notes overlap slightly. Inferred: attack 1-3 ms, decay 400 ms, sustain 30-40 %, release 300 ms.
- Sequencing - recalled: sequenced, even notes cycling up and back through a minor broken chord across about an octave, changing with the chord. Inferred: sixteenth-notes at the song tempo, gate 60-70 %.
- Modulation - no vibrato; inferred slow cutoff drift (0.1-0.2 Hz, small depth).
- Velocity - flat, machine-like.

History & Provenance
Nightcall was released in 2010 on Record Makers. It was produced by Kavinsky (Vincent Belorgey) with Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk and mixed by SebastiAn; the chorus is sung by Lovefoxxx of CSS and the verses are a vocoded male voice. It opened the film Drive (2011), was included on the album OutRun (2013), and returned to wide attention when Kavinsky performed it at the Paris 2024 Olympic closing ceremony (recalled, medium confidence).
Gear note (unverified): this research knows of no published instrument or patch list for the session. Every setting in The Sound is an inferred reconstruction from the recalled recording, and this pack does not claim the original patch.

Heard In · Adapted By
- Kavinsky - Nightcall (2010): enters in the intro after the payphone sound effects and continues under verses and choruses (recalled).
- Drive (2011) opening titles use the track from its intro, so this figure is the first music heard (recalled).
- Kavinsky - OutRun (2013): the album carries the same recording.
- London Grammar's cover (2013) drops the synth figure for piano and guitar, which shows how much of the original's identity sits in this part (interpretive).

Performance & Technique
Sequenced rather than played; the expression is in the gate and the filter.
| control | gesture | effect |
|---|---|---|
| sequencer / arp | programme the broken minor chord as even notes over about an octave, change on the bar | the rolling figure (recalled) |
| gate | about 60-70 % so notes just overlap the release | the soft, connected roll (inferred) |
| velocity | flat | even, machine-like pulse |
| filter cutoff automation | darker in the intro, a little more open once the drums enter | arrangement movement (recalled shape, inferred amounts) |
| modwheel | small cutoff lift | inferred |

FX & Chain
- Light Juno-style chorus for width (recalled halo, inferred device).
- Stereo delay, dotted-eighth against quarter, low mix, dark repeats.
- Plate or hall reverb, low in the mix.
- High-pass around 150 Hz to stay clear of the bass; a touch of presence around 3 kHz.
- Gentle 3:1 compression to keep the roll even.

Renditions
Auto-generated from the create-preset fan-out mapping outcomes; regenerated each run.
- Korg MS-20 Mini — "Nightcall Arp (MS-20, sequenced)" — confidence medium — 20 control(s) — No onboard arpeggiator or sequencer: drive the figure from a DAW or MIDI sequencer at the song tempo. The single EG2 shapes filter and amp together, and the 12 dB low-pass is softer than the 24 dB target. Chorus and delay come from the studio chain saved with this rendition.
- Korg Prologue 8 — "Nightcall Arp (Prologue)" — confidence medium — 40 control(s) — Arp type, range and tempo sync are set in the arpeggiator menu, not the panel. The 2-pole filter gives a slightly softer pluck than a 24 dB ladder. Onboard delay and reverb are off because the studio chain saved with this rendition supplies them.
